About Merwe Mode
Merwe Mode is an independent fashion house based in Cape Town, South Africa.
While the foundations of the brand were established in 2014, the vision, philosophy, and world of Merwe Mode have been carefully developed over the past three years. What exists today is the result of years of refinement, experimentation, and a shared commitment to creating clothing with purpose, longevity, and character.
The creative direction of Merwe Mode is shared by partners Deeva and Christiaan, parents of 3 amazing children. Deeva’s experience includes an internship with Tom Ford in London, where she was exposed to the discipline, craftsmanship, and attention to detail that continue to influence her approach to design today. Christiaan (owner of Cape Film Supply) is a self taught entrepreneur. Turning his obsession for film and clothing into his career. Together, they have built a brand that exists at the intersection of clothing, craftsmanship, and visual storytelling.
At the heart of Merwe Mode is a commitment to making things properly. Every garment is designed, patterned, cut, sampled, and produced in-house by our own team in Cape Town. By keeping the entire process close, we maintain a direct connection to the craft, the makers, and the integrity of each piece.
Beyond clothing, Merwe Mode is deeply influenced by a shared love of visual storytelling using analogue mediums. Through film photography, motion picture film, and traditional darkroom processes, we explore ideas of memory, texture, permanence, and human connection. These influences shape not only our campaigns and visual language, but the way we approach design itself.
Our process is analogue. No digital mediums are involved in how we make clothes. Deeva does not sketch her designs; she is a master pattern engineer, and pattern paper is the canvas, the garment itself is the sketch. Sometimes making a garment many times over before accepting its final form. Make it, wear it, change it, repeat...
Drawing inspiration from workwear traditions, contemporary tailoring, and sculptural forms, Merwe Mode seeks a balance between utility and elegance, structure and fluidity, individuality and wearability. The result is clothing designed to move effortlessly through everyday life while remaining distinctive and enduring.
We believe that the things we surround ourselves with should become more meaningful over time. Clothing should not be disposable. It should be lived in, repaired, remembered, and worn for years to come.
Made with intention.
